Congratulations Mr. Samuels on the recognition of your Inn
There are three chapters, or Inns, of the American Inns of Court devoted to workers’ compensation. The Justice James H. Coleman , Jr. Inn is in New Jersey. The Judge Alexander F. Barbieri Workers' Compensation American Inn of Court is in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The third is the E. Robert Williams Inn in Jacksonville, Florida. Perhaps a fourth will soon be founded in Florida, I hear rumblings about that periodically.
The Inn’s mission is to cultivate ethics, promote civility, develop member skills and foster community awareness of the legal profession and the courts. The E. Robert Williams Inn of Court focuses primarily on the Workers’ Compensation practice and is the only Inn of Court established for that purpose in Florida.
The E. Robert Williams Inn has enjoyed considerable success, due to the efforts of many Jacksonville workers’ compensation attorneys. One of the founding members was singled-out last year for special recognition. Former Inn President Benford L. Samuels was presented with the Jake Schickel Professionalism Award. This award recognizes exemplary professionalism in the practice of workers’ compensation. The kind of professionalism that not only separates the recipient from the crowd, but which provides an exemplar for the workers’ compensation community as a whole.
In keeping with the mission of the Inns of Court, it is this second point that is most important. The cultivation of ethics and promotion of civility is critical to the professional practice of law. The Inns are committed to it, and by recognizing a practitioner who exemplifies such characteristics, the Inn is promoting these traits, but also providing a role-model for young attorneys. Young attorneys are a focus of the Inn movement.
Florida Bar President Gwynne A. Young attended a meeting of the E. Robert Williams Inn last year and presented this professionalism award to Ben Samuels. This marked the second time the award was presented; the prior winner of this award was attorney Douglass E. Myers, Jr. The award was named for the Inn’s first President John “Jake” Schickel who was a co-founder of the Inn.
Ben Samuels is a Shareholder of Boyd & Jenerette and practices in the Jacksonville office. His practice concentrates in the field of workers’ compensation and Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation. I have known Ben for more than 20 years and have litigated against him. He is a professional, and has a well deserved reputation in his community. Mr. Samuels has lectured extensively on a wide range of topics in workers' compensation and longshore forums.
Congratulations Mr. Samuels on the recognition of your Inn!
